‘Arrow’ season 3 spoilers: Why we’re meeting only one Felicity parent (for now)
One of the fun things about “Arrow” over the past few months has been the opportunity to speculate about what Felicity Smoak’s backstory could be. We’d spent enough time with the character to feel attached and want to root for her, and had the show generated that backstory right away, there would probably not be that same level of excitement here.
Over time, this waiting game has of course led to the opportunity to come up with many great Felicity theories, including how she may be related to Anthony Ivo (which turns out to be not true) or how she may be tied to another character from the comic. We’re not going to get all of the answers in the upcoming “The Secret Origin of Felicity Smoak,” but we will at least meet her mother (played by Charlotte Ross).
So why not meet her father, as well? As showrunner Marc Guggenheim tells TVLine, the goal here seems to be to introduce a little bit of story at a time, rather than overwhelming anyone by bringing it all in at once:
“This is our first deep dive into Felicity’s character, so we knew we wanted to meet one of the parents … We felt both parents would be overload, and one might pull focus from the other.”
We’re not going to complain about anything right now, mostly out of fear that all the story-building and character development that we want will somehow go away. We’re just happy to get everything that we have when it comes to the character so far, and hopefully that lasts.
