‘America’s Got Talent’ rankings: Where Blue Journey, Mat Franco, Emil & Daniel stand now
Let’s begin this “America’s Got Talent” article with a little bit of news: We’re adding the show to our podcasting roster! Not long after the results show airs, we’re going to be recording with our pal Jason Prager our take on the week’s acts. This is going to be fun, and we figure we’re at least reasonably qualified for this as guys who have previously participated in a reality TV talent show (as in one challenge on “Beauty and the Geek” years ago).
Anyhow, let’s now get back to our weekly rankings. We’ve got 12 more contestants below, and we’re grading them based on performance quality, screen time, and of course the voting history for similar acts in the past.
12. AcroArmy – They didn’t really do anything that special to get to this round. Basically, we file them under “pretty good” but not “great.” Even if they are perfect, their odds of advancing are weak.
11. Jonah Smith – Our biggest mistake of the first round was thinking that Jonah had no chance of advancing. Still, we feel like his odds are low, and probably just made it this far based on being a singer on a weaker night of performances.
10. Smoothini – We loved him in the first round, but his last performance came across somewhat amateur. The guy really needs to conjure up something now that genuinely blows people away, and it cannot be so tiny and poorly-planned for the cameras.
9. Baila Conmigo – All ballroom dance acts on this show have a ceiling. They have a slight chance of advancing again, but even with that, there’s no way they are winning the competition. We just don’t see it.
8. Kelli Glover – We also find ourselves torn over Kelli. We feel like she’s very talented, but is she so great at making herself appealing to the audience? We just don’t get the sense that she is very well-liked, based on past voting results.
7. Wendy Liebman – We’re giving her a small chance since we do feel like Wendy can be very funny, and she’s really the only hope comics have this season now. Being different may come to her aid here.
6. Christian Stoinev – Very fun, and having the dog has brought his act to another level. But, is there anything new that you can do with the dog now? They really have to find a way to figure this out.
5. Mat Franco – He and Smoothini are somewhat similar in that they are both close-up magic acts, and that could hurt each one of them. With that being said, we’re picking the more polished of the two.
4. Emil & Daniel – The two are very unique, and that helps their odds. What hurts them, though, is that string acts have to almost be perfect because most audience members don’t know what they are really listening for. Pressure’s on.
3. Quintavious Jackson – Now if Quintavious could actually sing something that was hip and not on this show’s aging song list, we’d be so happy.
2. Jaycob Curlee – He is a guy with a guitar and a pretty good voice. It doesn’t even have to be great, and viewers this season still will eat him up.
1. Blue Journey – In the absence of the typical lights-and-sounds acts this year like Defying Gravity or Team iLuminate, and with Aerial Animation gone, these two really have to carry the torch for this sort of act. Luckily, they are good enough to make that happen.
