‘American Idol,’ Simon Cowell, David Cook, Paula Abdul more react to Michael Johns’ passing

Michael Johns -Earlier today, the sad news first broke regarding former “American Idol” finalist Michael Johns passing away in shocking fashion after developing a blood clot in his ankle. He was only 35 years old, and it marks the first occasion in which a former finalist on this show has passed away.

Even though not everyone from every season knew Michael, there is an intrinsic bond that forms between people who go through this experience. It was even more special back during the first nine seasons or so when this was the only singing competition dominating the market, and you couldn’t go anywhere without someone mentioning the show.

Not long after the news broke, a number of people affiliated with the show around that time started to issue their statements and condolences to Michael’s family. Here is a brief sampling of those messages, via Twitter and official statements.

Simon Cowell (who judged the show through season 9) – “I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away. A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael.”

Randy Jackson (who has been a part of the show since the beginning) – “So Sad. Too soon. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. RIP Michael Johns”

Paula Abdul (who judged the show through season 8) – “Heartfelt condolences to the family of @michael_johns from @AmericanIdol season 7. He will be missed.#RIPMichaelJohns.”

19 Entertainment – ”Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our American Idol family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time”

Former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe – “His acoustic version of the Bee Gees’ ‘To Love Somebody’ was very special but I will always remember him singing the Beatles’ ‘You Never Give Me Your Money/Golden Slumbers.’ One of his favorite songs. … He was a great talent and dear friend. My boys and I were devastated to hear the news.”

Most of the finalists from Michael’s season have remained quiet on social media, but it’s understandable given that this news may be hurting them the most. They toured with each other for a full summer in addition to being on the show, and all became a united family.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops, but once again thoughts and condolences go out to the family.
