‘Girl Meets World’ episode 5 review: Romeo & Julie & Farkle
If we were to definitely label one part of tonight’s “Girl Meets World” episode as the funniest of the entire half-hour, and came near the very beginning when we saw Riley, Farkle, and Lucas in the middle of a “Romeo & Juliet” production when Farkle went off-book and incited a near riot with the crowd. Somehow, he managed to completely overshadow the fact that Riley had almost got herself in a position to get a kiss from the guy of her dreams.
From here on out, the episode almost turned into a morality play about the truth, and the right ways to go about telling it. This started when Riley didn’t want to tell Farkle that he is really terrible at acting; thanks to her compliments, he only because more delusional. Someday, he is going to be a great joke contestant on an “American Idol” or an equivalent show.
Meanwhile, Maya refused to return a locket that she snagged from a lost and found, mostly because of the fact that the family inside of it reminded her of something happy … and something that she didn’t really have.
Of course most of these stories were resolved, but not without everyone learning something in the process. Farkle basically realized that he was terrible … and he was the first person to kiss Riley. Hilarious. Also, Maya returned the locket to its rightful owners, right when she was about to return it to the store. Coincidental, but remember the target audience here. We didn’t mind it.
The whole truth story was a little too on-the-nose, mostly because the show does need reminders here and there that there are older viewers watching. We’ll instead close here with something that we really like: Cory running around from Topanga after he told her that her chicken dinner was terrible. Even when Danielle Fishel says nothing, her facial expressions really can be gold. Grade: B-.
