‘NCIS’ season 12 spoilers: Which character is getting an origin story?
We predicted earlier this summer that this season of “NCIS” was going to be much more character-focused than the majority of season 11, and we already are seeing some of the fruits of that courtesy of the story today.
Speaking to TV Fanatic, showrunner Gary Glasberg confirmed that Ducky fans are going to be thrilled with the third episode of the season specifically, as this will really provide an opportunity to learn more about where this guy came from, and how he came to be the brilliant man working in the lab today:
“Episode 3 is a Ducky origins story, which we‘re going to find a young David McCallum and I’m very excited about that. Steve Binder is writing that and we’re going to learn things like why the bow tie and all kinds of stuff. It will be a lot of fun.”
To us, this really feels like the sort of story that should have been aired on the show a long time ago, and we really have no clue at all how it was not a part of the series until now. This is a man who has been a foundation of the entire series in some way, after all!
Hopefully, this story is going to spawn into some others involving other characters we could stand to know more about. It’s been well-publicized already that Gibbs and Bishop are going to have similar stories, and while we don’t know if we will be flashing back more with Tony, it was confirmed yesterday that the show is exploring a new love interest for the character.

Yipee, love David McCallum! Looking forward to his episode! Tony has had arcs since season 4, Season 7 had Flesh and Blood, Season 6 Bounce -Tony was in charge, Broken Arrow Season 8, Season 11- Once a Crook, Season 8 – Baltimore, Season 7 – Truth or Consequences, Season 7 – Reunion, Season 9 – Housekeeping, 200th episode – Secrets, Season 9 – Sins of the Father, Season 10 – You Had Better Watch Out, Season 10 – Past, Present and Future, Season 11 – The Admiral’s Daughter were all Tony episodes. He hasn’t missed out on too much.

I’m not talking about stand alone episodes. I’m talking about arcs that last more than one episode. Some of the episodes you mentioned were hardly Tony centric. Reunion was about Ziva. Broken Arrow did feature DiNozzo Senior but Tony was the comic butt monkey in that one. The 200th episode was the collassal bore Life Before His eyes, which was all about GIbbs. And although T or C featured Tony, Ziva was object or that arc. Housekeeping was again, all about promoting Ziva/tiva and not Tony at all. Tony was only used in P, P, and Future because the writers had to scrap winding up Ziva’s big revenge arc since her portrayer quit at the last minute. Gibbs and Ziva have always been the feature player in all arcs since season 4. Tony’s main job has been to humiliate himself for comic relief and be awed, corrected, and out shone by Ziva and Gibbs. As a Tony fan I’m really sick of it and I’m really tired of how the show writers have to push Gibbs forward in every situation now. To allow Tony to be brave, smart, independent now seems out of the question as he must always need Gibbs sage advice and help so that we get our weekly dose of Gibbs superiority.

I’m glad that Ducky is getting a Ducky centric episode this season. We seem to get at least 3 or 4 Gibbs – blast from the past episodes per season, so I’m really too excited about meeting yet another ex wife. I hope Tony gets more than just some romance this season. His character hasn’t had a story arc that featured him since season 4. I wish they’d give the Gibbs arcs a break and give us a Tony one. I don’t hold out much hope though as Tony seems to be an afterthought and just more support cast on the series these days.
