‘The Leftovers’ episode 3 preview: A request, and hope for faith restored

Faith is a central issue on HBO’s “The Leftovers,” but not always in the way in which you would want to immediately assume. There are not a wide array of people sitting around and wondering whether or not the raptured are going to return, and there is no investigation into how or why it happened.

Instead, this show is more about the reaction to the event, and the struggle to understand now what faith could mean. The “Left Behind” series, another story about a Rapture-like event, showed a group that came to be deeply religious almost immediately after the event took place. This story is very different, and shows a group of people who are leery of committing to religion yet again, and understanding just what it means.

As a matter of fact, the sneak peek video below shows that only just now, years removed from the event, is the church community starting to stabilize and baptisms are beginning again. This may be a reason of the psychological battering that many of these people may have received. A certain percentage of them more than likely felt spurned by the fact that they identified as Christians and believers, and were yet still left on the earth. It’s a search for meaning, and they may not find the answers that they are looking for in scripture.

Even in the midst of all these religious questions, the sneak peek also hints at some issues that are very true to everyday life, including the fact that churches need money to survive and operate, and that is something that is very hard to come by in this world.

Stay tuned, as we will have some more coverage of “The Leftovers” in the near future.
