‘The Last Ship’ episode 4 preview: ‘We’ll Get There’ and its possible irony
We have to say that there is something both strange and poetic about the new episode of TNT’s “The Last Ship,” mostly because one of the major issues at the center of it is a lack of water in the middle of the ocean. Curse that salt!
On a serious note, though, we believe that this may actually have the potential to be the strongest episode of the show to date for a number of simple reasons. For one, it is taking a look at a problem that is internal rather than a number of forces outside of the ship. This gives the writing a better sense of familiarity, and you are not trying to do too much on a show that really is only four episodes into its run.
Also, sickness brings out the best and worst of characters. We have been among those saying that this series needs to allow these people time to grow and develop; we know that Michael Bay loves his explosions, but there will be plenty of time for great effects later. This episode seems to be realizing that, and reeling us in to the people who we are meant to care about the most. If we start to really like these people and want to wish them well, it is going to be a heck of a lot easier for us in the end to want to root for their success.
Finally, there is a little bit of false hope in the title of “We’ll Get There” that interests us. While we are sure that a certain number of characters will “get there,” given that Eric Dane and Adam Baldwin are two of the leads of the show, there is no guarantee that everyone will. Given the fact that this episode revolves around sickness, we will actually be surprised if everyone does find a way to survive.
