‘MasterChef’ season 5, episode 7 review: The first Cutter is the deepest

Tonight’s “MasterChef” was stuffed full of surprises, and the biggest one to us was seeing mortal enemies Ahran and Leslie somehow find a way to get along and actually deliver a great team challenge. This was surf ‘n turf themed, and a very fun challenge just to see what people come up with.

Unfortunately, you have some people routinely who struggle to put up good food, or really take any substantial risks. Francis B. and Christian are both great cooks, but the two served up something that was so predictable and either one of them could have done. Meanwhile, Dan and Cutter created a culinary catastrophe thanks largely to the fact that they did not communicate here at all.

These two teams remained in danger going into a pressure test that was themed all around spring rolls, which the judges perhaps unfairly decided that Dan would be good at just because of the fact that he lived in China. Granted, he did do enough to save himself, but it was thanks to his sauce that he stuck around. Meanwhile, Cutter only stuck around thanks solely to the fact that Francis B. was word.

Seeing Francis leave was definitely a shock, given a few weeks ago he was a favorite. The guy just started to struggle, and then couldn’t bounce back to the point where he served greasy spring rolls to the judges. We’ll miss him from a talent perspective, but when it comes to entertainment, we can’t say that he was bringing a lot to the table. The show definitely kept around the right people when it came to drama down the road. Grade: B-.
