ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 7: Nathan Fillion’s Rick, Stana Katic’s Kate, and the child debate
Should there be more children coming to “Castle” in the future? This is something that was first raised in the episode last season entitled “The Good, the Bad, and the Baby,” and we don’t feel like it was ever really answered definitively as to whether or not children are something that Castle and Beckett will consider down the road.
Since this was left reasonably open-ended to us and we are in the midst of a longer offseason, why not spend a moment or two looking at the issue now? It is something that will obviously be dealt with again for Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion’s characters (especially if they are married soon), and this could even be something that is discussed in the writers room the longer that the show stays on the air.
The case for kids – The easiest one here is that this is a popular story extension for many TV shows, and it also adds instantly another layer to the series that impacts the characters’ day-to-day lives. If you are struggling to think of interesting new things for your characters to do, throwing some kids in there is a pretty popular way to handle things more often than not.
There are some interesting dynamics that could come out of this as well, given that there is a role reversal going on here in that Castle is the much warmer and more nurturing parent, while Beckett is distant and struggles with it.
The case for no kids – One, this is just so boring and predictable a route for a show to go in at this point in its run. Also, Castle already has a grown-up daughter in Alexis, and that would just be a little strange for her to have a sibling that is basically young enough to be her own child. Personally, we’d rather see the characters take on new and interesting criminals, and not be stuck in the same rut that many other shows have went through at this point. (We’re not saying that kids in general are a rut, but this is how it comes across often on TV.)

kate should have a sayso shouldn’t she? it sounded to me like rick wants a child with kate. when kate says she will feel differently when they have one of their own, it seemed like rick was expecting it to happen. and why odd for castle to have a child with alexis grown? plenty of men who marry again have a second family. however, what about the loft? is it big enuf for a baby, a nanny, Martha and a married couple. hmmm. won’t kate want a home with just her and rick? one child will add lots of pizzazz and story lines galore!

i think it would be a great end for the castle series to see castle & beckett having some children, but i realy think it should be the end, so maybe in 5 or 7 years :)

I would love to see them have a baby together while the show is still on .It would bring a whole new dynamic to their relationship and how they handle having a baby would be hilarious to watch it’s a natural progression in a marriage .Maybe all of them can take turns taking care of it because Castle would still want to have Beckett’s back in solving murders .Yes it’s a GREAT idea.

They would take turns if Castle would have been an official partner or a real detective, but he isn’t. They can’t take turns or anything.

Everyone (generally) are saying a baby would mess things up and it just tickles me how everyone is so sure of it. It reminds me of how everyone was so sure letting them consumate their relationship and be a real couple would “mess things up” and the show would get cancelled. Not only did that not happen but both the ratings and total viewership went up and, imo, the show is just as funny and inventive as it ever was. I can understand the argument to have pregnancy/kids happen at the end of the series *BUT* I also think it’s entirely possible to have one or both happen *during* the series. As much as Marlowe sometimes upsets me with his spotty continuity and character developement/regression I do think he and the writers are capible of making pregnancy/babies/kids work *during* the course of the show if the want to – and with or without time jumps. It’s called creativity and finding new ways of making an old story concept work.

Baby and having a relationship are very different things! Even in a relationship, both characters are involved equally, and they can show it, I for one never thought a relationship would mess things up. A baby would mean Castle having to stay home, considering all that has come to know about him in the show as a father, and Beckett having work to do.

I don’t see a problem with the age gap, I was 23 when my youngest brother was born & I have a better sibling relationship with him than I do with the sibs I shared my childhood with. I think watching Beckett deal with pregnancy would be a hoot, they could time it so the babe is born near the end of the series so the audience won’t have time to get bored with it, but can see the characters dealing with it, which would be fun, so I say YES!

I absolutely love Castle’s fatherly side and would love to see them have a baby just to see him be a dad all over again. I think Alexis would love to be a big sister even if she’s much older. I don’t think kids would be a rut for this show because every episode centers around a murder case, with the characters’ personal lives in the background. That would probably continue to be the case even with kids. I think it would even give Martha and Alexis more to do on the show actually and obviously add more dimension to Castle and Beckett’s relationship.

Bro, Castle is a baby person, and he is not needed in a precinct, why would he want to go the precinct everyday. Baby storyline would be a huge drag or at least a character destroyer. He didn’t allow a nanny for Alexis and he shouldn’t for this kid, while he took care of Alexis personally, always being there for her and everything, and now he would be with Beckett most of the time, that wouldn’t be right, and if they show Beckett alone in the precinct, that isn’t what the show is about.

they should have at least 1 kid and they can still have more interesting criminals and have a baby!
Harvey
June 16, 2014 @ 8:59 am
Actually they can’t. I mean, Castle took care of Alexis on his on, always being there with her, now he would just give his kid to Martha or Alexis, seriously? Most of the time he would want to be with his kid, and it just wouldn’t suit the whole show. He is not a detective and won’t be needed in the precinct, seasons with a kid would be a huge drag. And I do want more Castle seasons, but I would rather have an end of show than a drag.

don’t forget there are nannies now that castle can afford. .
Harvey
July 1, 2014 @ 3:09 pm
It was never about affording or money. He had money then too. He didn’t get a nanny for her then because he just didn’t like to have them, he said even he got bad nannies and everything. That’s why he took care of Alexis himself because he didn’t like to have nannies.

In “The good the bad and the baby” they said that they wanted a baby together. And with the look on Beckett’s face when she was holding Benny after they had changed him, you could clearly tell that she wanted a Castle baby. It would be so excited if they were to have a baby!

Rick Castle is almost childlike himself, we have seen it trough all the seasons he still plays with toys ,even if they are the grown up variety, Beckett OTOH,struggles with the the whole mothering idea, and Castle is a handfull most of the time ;thus I see them remaining a solving crime couple ,with a house already occupy with a very interesting and dynamic mother in law ,and one daughter that perhaps could have a child herself ,that’ll be a neat twist.
They are a fun couple the way they are ,don’t change a thing?

Thank you!! Don’t you just love the way the article left that out? And besides that in “The Good, the Bad, and the Baby” they did make a decision about kids. Does no one remember the scene in the dumpster?! Castle explained his feelings and worries and Beckett reassured him that when they *did have kids* (hello) she wasn’t going to let him carry the full load of it and be absent the way Meredith was with Alexis. She also said earlier in the episode that she wasn’t anti babies or kids, the way this article implies, but that she just didn’t think it wise to get attached to a baby that wasn’t theirs. Once again she was being logical and smart about the situation (something Castle loves about her) while Castle was being … Castle. :-)
This article reminds me of the media creating a quarterback controversy during the off-season when there really isn’t one in the actual football camp. :-|
My main problem with show right now is Marlowe once again rewriting a character’s *well established* history in order to suit a particular story idea. Beckett having a forgotten marriage was ridiculous and dumbed down the character not to mention the fact that someone (the NYPD, the federal government, the IRS, all the different police agencies that arrested Rogan) would have discovered this marriage long ago and brought it to her attention!

Harvey

They would have kids, but they should probably show it at the end of the show that Beckett gets pregnant, as the show is about them solving crimes together, a baby would mess things up, as Castle is a baby person, he took care of Alexis on his on, always being with her, doesn’t hire a nanny, isn’t needed in a precinct, meaning the whole show would change.

I too have wondered about some of these things as well as not having any idea why nobody on the show knows when to use “me” instead of “I” in the objective case. and rick is a writer?
Harvey
June 15, 2014 @ 10:51 am
Pregnancy and kids would drag the show. First there would be a huge time jump, but okay, pregnancy near the last episodes of the whole show would be awesome, but kids wouldn’t be. Everybody knows Castle is a writer and not needed in the precinct, while Beckett would have work, and then the whole kind of awkward situation between Alexis too, that would all be a huge drag. People love Caskett solving case, but they won’t be able to do that with kids, at least not a whole season. They have also showed it way too clearly that Castle doesn’t accept nannies and takes care of his child himself, so again. I would like the whole show to end when Beckett gets pregnant, or she should get pregnant near the end, and the end should have them having a baby. Then they could make one long 1 hour or 2 hour episode in which they show baby having problem, being kidnapped, or something like that.
Harvey

No doubt it will be interesting to watch it, I personally would love to watch it, but it will just not fit, and dragging the show, or destroying characters, Castle being very less in episodes, or having a nanny, would only make the show bad.

If they clean up the finale mess then it’s a question that they could be asking themselves during the season. However, if they don’t fix the problems with Beckett’s character and do the actual wedding, all of this supposing is pointless. The story right now is a total train-wreck. It needs to get back on track.
I wouldn’t say having a kid is predictable. That reminds me of the thinking that says putting the couple together and letting them get married kills the show. Show drag it out beyond belief (like what Castle did in the finale) and then throw things together at the last minute when the ratings get wobbly. That, is what’s predictable. What’s depressing about Castle was that it finally seemed like the a show had broken the mold, but then it went it did the kind of gimmicky – let’s stop the wedding – season ending that I’d expect from average soap-opera-like shows.
What would be different is the main couple actually planning to have a child – like the show did with the Ryans. The whole accidental pregnancy is something that is way overplayed. Then the show could decide about her getting pregnant depending on if the actors sign on for a season eight. If they got a season eight it might be interesting to see how Caskett dealt with trying and Beckett not getting pregnant right away.
Harvey

Pregnancy would only drag the show. There would have to be a huge time jump, episodes without cases also, I mean seriously, all the time bad guys while Beckett is pregnant would need just way too awesome storyline, and still would only narrowly escape being dragged. One long episode after the whole show ended would be better to show how they deal with everything, not a whole season, don’t you think?
Lisa Broom
June 16, 2014 @ 1:48 pm
They haven’t dragged out the wedding too much, it’s only one botched wedding, in Lois & Clark they really dragged it out far too long, took half a season of almost but not quite managing it.
