NBC’s ‘The Voice’ results: Are Kristen Merlin, Christina Grimmie, Jake Worthington in finale?
On tonight’s new episode of “The Voice,” there was quite a homecoming when it comes to past contestants. There were performances from Tessanne Chin, Will Champlin, and Jacquie Lee from last season, which in turn serves as a pretty good advertisement for the show’s upcoming concert tour.
But in addition to all of that, there were of course other results that needed to be explored. Going into this episode, we felt like it was pretty expected that Jake Worthington and Josh Kaufman would make it in based on their iTunes rankings … which would surprisingly put Christina Grimmie in danger of going home for the first time all season. Sometimes, big risks on this show do not always pay off.
Well, it turned out that our pre-show predictions turned out to be correct! We don’t quite understand what Jake brings to the table to be in the finale, but this just so happens to be what it is. It’s hard to really see him having a huge career after the show. Josh Kaufman, meanwhile, could have some similar challenges, but at least has an excellent body of work on the show. We imagine that the real controversy here is mostly going to come in what happened last.
Are we glad that Christina Grimmie survived based on her back catalog? Sure, but we definitely got the feeling that NBC and Mark Burnett were in a panic at the thought of losing their longtime favorite, and arguably the one contestant who could have a pop career after this. We understand if some want to call shenanigans over her performing last on the night, especially when she has performed near the end of many shows to date. We actually thought Kristen Merlin was a little stronger in her save-me song.

Mark Burnett’s decision to use the Instant Save in the Top 5 round this season (and not in Season 5) leaves a stain on the show. I like Christina Grimmie, voted for her, and don’t blame her for what happened. But, I don’t like the way the finals were determined. The decision to use the Instant Save wasn’t simple producer meddling. It was manipulation of the results. Shame.
