‘American Idol XIII’ top 3 rankings: Will Caleb Johnson, Jena Irene, Alex Preston make finale?

American Idol -The “American Idol XIII” finale is only a matter of eight days away from this writing, but who is going to make it there? That is what we are hoping to answer with this edition of our contestant rankings. In the end, Jessica Meuse finishing in fourth place is something that was certainly predictable, given her recent finishes in the bottom two.

Now, the rubber meets the road, and the top 3 have to do something extra-special in order to get to that last round. Every little thing matters in this edition of the rankings, from overall placement to performance quality to whether or not you know how to behave yourself in front of reporters. (Yes, we’re targeting one person in particular here.)

3. Caleb Johnson (last week: 4) – Maybe we are being petty, but we’ve always felt like the winner of “American Idol” should do a good job being an ambassador for the show, and someone that handles everything on the show as well as they can. We haven’t really appreciated the way that Caleb has handled multiple situations, including the “r word” controversy from a little while ago. No doubt, he is a gifted singer, but even based on his performances, there hasn’t been anything original enough to convince us that he will sell records.

2. Jena Irene (2) – Jena definitely has star power, but the challenge for her after the show will be finding a way to have this power channeled into the right songs and the right career. She’s a little bit of Haley Reinhart and Angie Miller rolled into one person, but with a little bit of an edge added in there. We do very much like the idea of someone winning who had to really fight through the early rounds to be remembered.

1. Alex Preston (1) – Alex to us has to be the favorite, regardless of where the show placed him on the results show last week. He just as the right archetype for an “American Idol” winner given that he is a singer/songwriter who also happens to play the guitar. His career after the show would almost be a complete toss-up, but we at least feel like he would work hard and try to be original. He would just need time to actually create something that was his sound rather than that of other producers.
