Larry Wilmore to replace Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central with ‘The Minority Report’

Comedy Central -How in the world do you replace Stephen Colbert? The only simple answer to that is that you hire someone who also has a ton of experience as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

It was announced on Friday, per The Hollywood Reporter, that Comedy Central has hired writer / comedian Larry Wilmore to host a new show entitled “The Minority Report,” which will premiere in January. Wimore has been the “Senior Black Correspondent” on Stewart’s show for a long time, and understands the tone and the delivery of these shows very well. He also brings something slightly different, while still keeping the essence of the hour-long block the same.

It was not entirely clear for a long time what the intention for Comedy Central was going to be when it comes to following up Colbert. There were some who suspected that maybe the show would stick “@midnight” in the spot, given that the Chris Hardwick comedy show with all of its famous “points” has found some success. Also, another possibility for many was that the show was going to be something completely different and not in the “Colbert Report” tradition at all. Stephen is leaving in order to become the new host of “The Late Show” after David Letterman leaves next year.

We like the choice of Wilmore, with the biggest reason being that this is someone who has the chops to pull him off, and the “Daily Show” audience already knows him. Let’s just hope that they check him out the first few weeks and figure out how funny he is.
