‘Game of Thrones’ season 4, episode 5 preview: Aidan Gillen on changes for Littlefinger
The fascinating thing about “Game of Thrones” is that there are very few characters that have been presented who are either truly good or truly evil, with the exception of maybe Joffrey. Everyone has their layers, and we have come over time to see that there are layers humanity in even the most rotten of apples.
Take, for example, the character of Littlefinger. At times, we have known this man to be one of the greediest out there, as he is both power-hungry and obsessed on getting what he wants to the point where he doesn’t even mind who he hurts so much in order to get it. Right now, the person who is clearly on the chopping block to be potentially hurt is none other than Sansa Star, but who knows? The changes that are coming for this man may be enough to keep her safe.
Speaking in a larger interview with GQ about playing a villain, actor Aidan Gillen does his best to describe how we have seen his character develop, and also how that could change in the future:
“I think as time goes on, he gets more secure amid the insecurity of others. He’s calmer and more collected, and can ponder the world and his place in it a little more. Of course, he has always been conscious of his place socially and of climbing up, and outside of, where he’d been expected to reach. I’d say over this season we may see something of a sweeter man—with maybe even a trace of humility.”
We don’t necessarily root for Littlefinger, but at the same time, we are fascinated to watch him work. He’s a more dastardly version of Varys, a man who really has not had the necessary screen time so far this season.
