‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9, episode 20 review: A Marshall / Lily – ‘Daisy’ shocker
Given the drama and the speculation that followed last week’s “How I Met Your Mother” episode, we admittedly spent about half of “Daisy” worrying about whether or not the show could live up to it. For a while, it didn’t seem like it would. It was instead a weird sort of “what happened?” tale regarding Lily running off to the home of The Captain.
Then, things started to change. We had a sinking suspicion that Lily could be pregnant again, and then quickly corrected ourselves by remembering that she had been ordering drinks almost the entire wedding weekend from Linus. This was all an elaborate plot devised by the writers to completely trick us … since she IS pregnant again, and she has been ordering non-alcoholic drinks the entire time.
We’re somewhat stuck on this little fact because it was probably the one flaw that keeps “Daisy” from being legendary. Why would she be so thirsty if there was no booze in her beverages? The show worked very hard to misdirect us here, and we’re not quite sure that they had to.
Away from this, it was nice getting to see Robin’s mother in the flesh, even if Tracey Ullman did not really have that much to do. The only thing that really came out of this episode, save for the pregnancy, was learning that Marshall was going to give up his job as a judge, and he was going to Italy with his wife. The funny tag at the end brought us a nice little cameo from Chris Elliott, and the reveal that the second child of Marshall and Lily was named Daisy … the spot where Marshall found the pregnancy test.
This was a fun episode, and one with a nice little emotional wrap-up for the show’s long-married couple. But, it didn’t quite wow us like what we had last week. Grade: B.

I think the point of the episode, particularly the Lily-Daisy storyline was to remind the viewers that the writers (mostly) know what they are doing, and certain gags, jokes, and hints, aren’t always done just for what it looks like on the face of it (or at least, that they know how to flip it on its head when they feel like it). It could be an answer to what they had to anticipate would be all the hand-wringing over the Mother in last week’s episode. Hell, there was even a moment there when I wasn’t convinced Robin was talking about Barney as she told her own mom she had someone she could always depend on, despite the seeming resolution of Ted’s affections for her.
I don’t trust them to end the series in a straight forward, obvious way, which is exactly what I like so much about this show.
