‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Jim Parsons, Bobby Moynihan ice dance without ice

SNL -This weekend marks the return of “Saturday Night Live” to TV, and it looks on the surface to be a rather great one! You’ve got Jim Parsons serving as the host this time around, and Beck as the musical guest. That’s a pairing that should appeal to all sitcom fans and rockers out there … and the fact that the “Big Bang Theory” star is on this show really just further cements just how dominant this show has become. Even other networks are trying to take advantage of it.

There are some inevitable “bazinga” jokes thrown in here, but Parsons aside from those comes across as very chill and relaxed … the anti Dr. Sheldon Cooper, if you will. He speaks with Bobby Moynihan’s sock puppet, participates in fake ice dancing, and also takes part in a funny gag about an elevator pass.

We’re not going to sit here and say that this is the greatest “SNL” promo of all time, but it is certainly above average. Typically we’d say that only about 33% of the promos are actually funny, and are usually just thrown-together bits that they don’t want to waste much time on while they prepare for the show. With this one, we’ll say around 60% of the comedy in here works. Parsons is very well-equipped to be a host, given that he has done comedy in front of a live audience before, and has also on many occasions been on the Broadway stage. He knows a crowd well.
