‘Girls’ season 3, episode 8 review: Patti LuPone strikes fear into Hannah’s heart
There are moments on “Girls” Sunday night where it started to feel a little bit more like a quirky sitcom than the sort of edgy comedy that it has sold itself to be over the years. Seeing almost everyone tell Hannah that Adam was going to cheat on her after landing a Broadway gig was one of those moments.
One of the real memorable parts of this story, though, came from Patti LuPone in a brilliant cameo appearance, where she was having to do some interview that she really didn’t want to do. We’ve actually done these sort of interviews before, so we can relate to what that experience is like. The only difference is that we didn’t pull a Hannah and turn the entire experience into an excuse to talk feverishly about ourselves.
The story from here was mostly about a feeding ground for insecurity, and what happens when you let that start to spiral. It was also about why Adam and Hannah are so good together; he understands that she is quirky, and she also understands that he is different. If someone can survive the madness that is Broadway, he is the one to ultimately end up doing it and not feeling completely torn up by the end of it.
While all this was going down, Ray and Marnie’s fling seems to already be at an end, while Jessa continues to go off the deep end courtesy of getting back with some past connections from rehab. We cannot say that we found either one of these stories that interesting, mostly because they really were not given proper time. For example, we’d be game to see an entire episode about Marnie and Ray versus just a couple of scenes. Lena Dunham’s characters are far more golden when given time to properly shine.
We did still laugh a few times despite this episode being predictable and straightforward, and thanks to that, we will recommend it. Grade: B.
