Ratings: ‘American Idol’ continues to perform well, but down versus 2013

The logo -Here is what we are very curious to watch when it comes to “American Idol” over the next several weeks: Whether or not the show really ends up being impacted by the Olympics and everything else on TV to the point that quality really doesn’t matter anymore. So far, the show is still tracking down versus 2013, and that is with a much better judging panel and shows that are by and large stuffed full of good talent.

The ratings for last night are still solid, at least in that the 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic was at least topics on broadcast for the night. (It probably also beat “Duck Dynasty,” but we can’t confirm that for now.) This was a great episode per our review, so why was the rating down a good seven-tenths from the premiere? The easiest way to answer that is that it’s still so hard these days to get together with people and actually talk about just how much we actually like an episode of the show. Singing shows are as original as selling burgers at a fast-food place: Everyone does it. You have to eventually be like an In N’ Out to get people excited still about what you are serving up.

Will “American Idol” grow its ratings during the season? Given the competition, we doubt it. The one thing that it has to hope for above all else is that it keeps the numbers around the same, and these are numbers that in turn Fox would be very happy with. While the show is not the juggernaut it once was, a 4.0 rating is nothing to sneeze at in the slightest. This would still be the best performance for any show on the network consistently, which would in turn to a renewal, the only way that we could ever really see “American Idol” in danger is if the ratings suddenly started to sink a little bit below 2.0 on a regular basis, and it is still pretty darn far away from that.

Of course, we’ll have more ratings conversation throughout the season. You can also click here to get some more updates worth singing about via our CarterMatt Newsletter.
