‘The Bachelor’: Juan Pablo Galavis against idea of gay ‘Bachelor,’ causes controversy

Well, it looks like ABC is going to be very busy trying to put out fires over the course of the next few days. Not long after we saw the Phil Robertson – “Duck Dynasty” controversy sweep headlines, current “Bachelor” star Juan Pablo Galavis may be forced to defend himself now after making comments suggesting that having a gay “Bachelor” may not be suitable for families to watch.

Juan Pablo made these comments in a conversation with The TV Page, who also posted an audio version online in order to corroborate the quotes posted. He response to the issue of if there should be a gay Bachelor was somewhat meandering, but there are still a few lines in here that are going to stand out:

“I don’t think it is a good example for kids to watch that on TV … Obviously people have their husband and wife and kids and that is how we are brought up. Now there [are] fathers having kids and all that, and it is hard for me to understand that too … It is confusing in a sense.  But I respect them because they want to have kids. They want to be parents. So it is a scale… Where do you put it on the scale? Where is the thin line to cross or not? You have to respect everybody’s desires and way of living. But it would be too hard for TV.”

Galavis also insinuates that gay people are more “pervert” in some way, which is probably the most incendiary word that he uses in the entire interview.

The problem that ABC is going to most-likely run into when it comes to this Juan Pablo controversy is that while they may try to cite some sort of language barrier or confusion about the question, there are still some words and phrases here that some are going to take issue with. If this story spreads, it could also do more damage to “The Bachelor” audience than that of “Duck Dynasty,” which has a mostly-conservative evangelical following. Are people going to tune out on the show because they don’t share the same belief as its leading man? That is what will be curious to see.

What do you think about Juan Pablo’s comments, and do you think that his beliefs about homosexuality and “The Bachelor” should impact whether or not you watch the show? Share your thoughts below.
