‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9 spoilers: What show is inspiring series finale?

We know that it may still seem like it is a little early to be talking about the “How I Met Your Mother” series finale, but then you have to remember that unlike many other shows, CBS is not going to keep it going on the air until May. The series finale date is instead set for March 31, and we feel like the primary goal for this is to try and allow there to be some room for experimentation in that 8:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot on Monday night. It’s hard to believe, but the show has really held firm there for almost a decade. There are few other long-running shows with that sort of commitment.

So while you wait for that final episode to air, where Ted meets The Mother (if he hasn’t already) and begins the rest of his life, you can at least get a tiny indication of just what sort of ending one of the show’s creators would like to see it have. In a post on Twitter, Craig Thomas had the following message to share about a certain long-running series that continues to touch him to this day with its series finale:

“Watched the #Cheers series finale again for inspiration; cried as hard as I did in 1993. A reminder why we do what we do #HIMYM … I’d be proud if #HIMYM finale were even half as good as that! #cheers”

When you look at the history of long-running comedies, it is very difficult for them to end in a way that satisfies the majority of their audience. Even some of the most popular shows out there, whether you are looking at the likes of “Seinfeld” and “Everybody Loves Raymond,” had finales that did not exactly make everyone happy. Even “The Office” had its share of detractors with the finale last May, even with the surprise return of Steve Carell.

Do you think that there is any way that the “How I Met Your Mother” finale can satisfy the majority of its fan following? Be sure to share your thoughts below!
