‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5: Does Ian Somerhalder’s Damon have to compete with Stefan?

Is the love triangle on “The Vampire Diaries” season 5 now officially back? We understand that there are going to be some people out there who feel like the entirely show is really all about Damon, Elena, and Stefan, and in some ways it is. These are the three characters who have been tied to one another since the beginning, and it feels like Nina Dobrev’s character is going to always be tied to them in one way or another.

But at the same time, we had to admit that we are ready to see it end a long time ago. The longer that you keep up the guessing game, the more unrealistic it is that the trio would really be stuck in a sea of confusion. Whenever the last season of the show does come up, that is when we would really like to see this topic of conversation re-enter the picture again.

While we cannot say for sure that our prophecy will be eventually true, executive producer Caroline Dries does tell TV Guide that Damon and Elena seemingly breaking up does not mean that we are back to square one when it comes to the characters:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a reset of the triangle … What the show does well is that it doesn’t just make rash decisions with people that causes them to just stop loving the people they love. Damon and Elena have a deep-rooted love for each other and you can’t just turn your back on that. Elena will always feel that for Damon even if they fight or [break up]. But we will see in future episodes that there is a huge strain in their relationship, bigger than them in a way.”

We’ll probably get a chance to see where the “Delena” relationship goes in the 100th episode on January 23, at least so long as not all of it is spent wondering whether or not Katherine is going to make it through her injury.
