‘American Idol’ notes: Season 12 scoop, plus Nicki Minaj and Kris Allen
With all of the “American Idol” season 12 news that is currently breaking out there, it really only seems appropriate that we begin this edition of our show notes by talking a little bit about that before transitioning into something that any Kris Allen wants to see: him back performing out on stage for the Out Alive Tour.
Nigel talks season 12 – First, we have to begin with some rather surprising news from Nigel Lythgoe that this coming season may actually have just a top ten and only that, meaning that the judges may not have additional wild card choices, and what we see is really what we get when the show kicks off its live rounds on March 7.
Speaking in a conference call with reporters this week in an effort to promote the new season, Nigel explained that really he has never even liked the idea of having a “top 12” or “top 13” to begin with, and they may have found a way to fill out the weeks without having to add additional contestants into the fold:
“It was always created in order to fill the transmission times that Fox wanted. So we created top 13s and top 12s … [And now] as we’ve always done with ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ – There’s your Top 10, It’s a knock out competition. We’ve always attempted to do that. But we’ve never found a way to do it with everything that’s been asked of us. And this year, we have.”
What’s our guess? We know that there will have to be some sort of non-eliminations to extend the show long enough so that these ten singers will keep the season running until near the end of May, so our guess is that without a wild card, they will have a non-elimination the first week only to then maybe not have one at all later on in the show (possible for “Idol Gives Back” or something else).
We won’t create a full section about this, but we also want to point out that in the middle of all of the “American Idol” coverage at TCA this week, Nicki Minaj was asked a billion times about the alleged threats she made to Mariah Carey … and she insisted yet again that it was all bogus.
Kris Allen performs – Now, let’s get to the music. In launching his tour in Vermont mere days after he first banged up his wrist in a nasty car accident, Kris still found a way to give a ton of energy to everyone in the crowd while sporting a cast with all of the Out Alive Tour stops written on it. The song below is a performance of “Killing Me Softly.” Like with another former “American Idol” winner in Kelly Clarkson, Allen is doing a selection of covers over the course of the entire tour.
