Outlander season 3: South Africa filming officially begins!

South Africa filming -

Someone get to the top of the nearest tower and sound a bugle: South Africa filming is officially underway for Outlander season 3! We’ve seen pre-production take place over the past several days, but today executive producer Maril Davis confirmed the news in a post on Twitter.

Specifically, the cast and crew are in Cape Town, the largest city in the country, and also the place where the studio is where much of the footage is being produced. That’s where the architecture was put into place thanks to Black Sails, and we will see Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) at sea as the two characters make their journey over to Jamaica. It’s a beautiful place, which is why the city can double so much for other Caribbean spots.

One of the reasons why Davis compares South Africa filming to the “first day of school” is because they are working with a wide array of new crew members. You need people with experience being at this studio, and also people who understand who to make some of these scenes-at-sea happen. It’s also rather pricey to send down your entire crew and provide accommodations when there are talented local crews already in the area that can be utilized. By the time filming gets around to the end of the three-month period that the cast and crew are there, we imagine that many of these people will feel a little more like family. That’s what happens when you work with the same people for 12-14 hour days, often for five or six days a week for months on end.

Will there be other updates from production throughout the process? You have to believe that’s likely! For the time being, though, it is still worthwhile singling out various achievements during the process of making Outlander season 3 happen. You want to look back at some of these touchstones as important moments during the journey, especially if you are a loyal fan who likes to feel as though you’re a part of the process.

What is else there?

Prior to the start of South Africa filming, we posted one of the first photos of Caitriona and Sam posted by her via social media. You can of course see that, and check out some further Outlander stories from as of late, over at the link here.
