‘Girl Meets World’ season 4 renewal effort continuing; show boss confirms talks

Girl Meets World -

Is there going to be a chance to see Riley Matthews take on the world on another network? To date, any time that we’ve spoken about a “Girl Meets World” renewal effort has been within the context of fan campaigns. We hadn’t actually heard that anyone affiliated with the show was showing an interest in saving it.

Now, we’re starting to hear otherwise. Speaking to TVLine, creator Michael Jacobs confirms that thanks largely to the fans, there is at least a hope that the show could land elsewhere after the Disney Channel’s disappointing cancellation. Unfortunately, there is no word as of yet as to where this potential future home could be:

“There are talks underway, but we’re at the very very beginning stages … And I can tell you it’s because of the audience’s reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places. For anyone in show business, if you ask them why they’re doing something and they say they’re doing it for themselves, they won’t sustain long. Those that answer ‘We’re doing it for the audience’ and mean it, they sustain.”

Take this news as a glimmer of hope, but remember that the majority of shows in the position of “Girl Meets World” do not end up finding a new home. There are the exceptions here and there like a “Nashville” or a “Longmire,” but the majority of the time when you’re canceled, you’re done. You just have to move on to the next thing.

As we’ve mentioned on the show previously, it feels as though Netflix is the most likely suitor for more episodes. It already is the show’s streaming home, and if the series wanted to keep most of its original tone intact, they could do it here better than anywhere else. Freeform is intriguing, but given that it and the Disney Channel are owned by the same parent company, they would’ve announced a move before canceling it in order to save the show bad PR. There are some other possible outlets out there, with Hulu being one. We’re a little less bullish on Amazon, given that they’ve shown little willingness to pick up shows that existed elsewhere first. (Maybe we’re speaking here out of bitterness that they didn’t save “Hannibal.”)
