‘Girl Meets World’ cancellation: Why Netflix should consider season 4 renewal

Girl Meets World -

In the past 24 hours since writing about the “Girl Meets World” cancellation over at the Disney Channel, we’ve absolutely had a good bit of time to think about if there is a path to the show coming back on the air, and we do know that it seems slip. The majority of the key talent associated with the show seem to think that the series is over, and it may very well be since it is so closely associated with the Disney brand.

We know we (and so many others) have suggested that moving the show to Freeform would be ideal, and in many ways it would. Yet, at the same exact time we’re not altogether sure that this is something that is realistic. It’s owned by the same parent company as the Disney Channel, and if it didn’t work there, what would be the logic in assuming that the show would work over on Freeform? There may be slightly older viewers interested, but trying to reinvent the show on the fly in order to appeal to that audience could prove challenging.

In the end, Netflix upon reflection does feel like the right place for you to campaign, send your tweets, and to contact in any form — with there being a few simple reasons for it.

1. They already hold the streaming rights – If Amazon was streaming these episodes, this would be a little bit more difficult. However, they’re not. They already have an investment in the show, so they may be able to assess the popularity of it. (Suggestion: Go watch the show on Netflix if you’re serious about wanting to make a renewal happen — this shows that there would be interest.)

2. They already have “Fuller House” – Clearly, there is an interest that exists there when it comes to nostalgia, and this is a show that can court a demographic that they don’t often get elsewhere: Families, and young pre-teens looking for a popular property.

3. Creative flexibility – Airing on Netflix would allow “Girl Meets World” to be roughly the same show with a few tweaks to age it up along with the main characters. It’s audience is far more fluid, so it’s not as jarring a change as it would be to go onto any other network.

Like we’ve said, we don’t even know if a renewal at another network / streaming service is even possible, or something that is being explored. We’re not interested in giving out false hope; instead, this article is meant to recognize what the show’s best chance would be in the event that you want to fight to keep the show around for more.
