‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 5 reaction (PBS): Dr. Turner and the dangers of smoking

Dr. Turner

Sometimes, it is easy to forget that there was once an era that did not realize that smoking was hazardous to your health. Also, while watching “Call the Midwife” you do at times get so caught up in the characters and the story that you tend to forget that this show was set in such an era. (Warning: Spoilers lie ahead from Sunday night’s new installment.)

This photo above, which may be one of the oddest ones that we’ve seen from the series, probably perfectly describes how Dr. Turner felt upon realization that smoking was bad for your health. It’s something that he has personally partaken in over the course of his life; not only that, but he also had to figure out how to practice what modern science was preaching. He’s starting to realize that maybe he is not the master of all things medicine like he once thought that he was, and there are many things still for him to learn. We’ll get a chance to see more of that this season.

The crazy thing to think about here is that this is still the tip of the iceberg for the doctor, since we’ve already gotten a good sense about how certain drugs this season are leading to problems for pregnant women.

We’re not going to say that this episode is our favorite of the season (read our full review from when it aired in the UK over here); for the time being, though, what we will say is that we did find at least the Violet – Fred subplot very entertaining; it’s not something that we’ve seen a lot of over the course of the season.
