NBC’s ‘The Voice’ results: On #VoiceSaveKorin, #VoiceSaveBraiden, and further controversy

VoiceThis happens almost every week on “The Voice” one way or another: Viewers rally hard to save their favorite contestant on social media, and there is a clear feeling of disappointment when their efforts turn out to be in vain.

Following, there are also many conspiracy theories, and we’ve heard some of them tonight from people complaining that #VoiceSaveKorin was trending worldwide while #VoiceSaveBraiden was not. The problem here is that Braiden Sunshine advanced to the next round while Korin Bukowski was eliminated.

What do we make of this? First and foremost, the show’s not rigged. NBC does not release the exact number of tweets that they receive per artist, but there is enough data that can be scanned from the internet that they would be called out if they were to do something fishy. Sure, there are many other things that you can complain about: Viewers tweeting who are not even watching the show, the West Coast getting screwed out of having their voices heard, or people throwing up the hashtags before NBC officially opens it up to the public.

As for having something trend, Twitter’s algorithm for this is complicated and factors in volume, tweet originality, total reach, and a variety of other factors. If many Braiden fans tweeted the same exact thing, then it would be less likely to trend than a series of more creative Korin tweets. What we’re saying here is to not automatically assume that the same criteria for trends is one and the same for what “The Voice” uses.

Oh, and we should also mention that #VoiceSaveBraiden did eventually trend, just a little bit after Korin did from our location.
