‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 debate: Do you want Mulan with Aurora, Red, Merida, or someone else?

The latest -

There has definitely been some big news over the course of the past few days for “Once Upon a Time” fans, and it all traces back to the character of Mulan. She’s coming back! Jamie Chung is set to appear over several episodes this season, and it will potentially span both the first half and the second half of the season.

Of course, one of the big mysteries that is out there at the moment is who you pair the character with. Co-creators Adam Horowtiz and Edward Kitsis have only said that there will be an LGBT romance this season, but they have declined to mention who the characters involved will be. We’re just assuming that Mulan is one, given that her sexuality has already been revealed and it would be strange to bring her back and not have her find someone.

As for who the other is, we’ve got some possibilities for you below…

Aurora – Obviously the top choice, given that Mulan already came close to admitting her feelings to her seasons ago. However, we have received no sign that Aurora reciprocates these feelings, and has had a child with Philip. In order to pair them up, Aurora and Philip would have to split, and the show would need to build something in a short amount of time to justify this and bring the two characters together. It’s possible, but it will be complicated.

Merida – Right now, one of the less complicated options given that we don’t know much about the show’s version of the character other than that she is going to be a major part of season 5. Making her a Mulan love interest would give her a long-lasting story.

Red – We feel like it is unlikely, mostly because we feel like the character has never been written in a way to suggest that she is interested in women. However, at the same time we don’t think that the character has been explored fully enough that it would render it impossible, and it may just be a subject that has not been broached. We do know that Meghan Ory is also returning for multiple episodes this season.

Someone new – Maybe there is an upcoming character that will be introduced as her love interest. At this point, we cannot see it really being anyone else on the show. When you look at most of the main female characters, they are all romantically linked to someone, and to pair them off with someone else would lead to lots of unhappy ‘shippers and questions as to what the point was.
