‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7 spoilers: Show boss on setting up Damon’s future

If nothing else, we have to give some of the team of “The Vampire Diaries” credit right now for being at least for the most part really self-aware of who they are and what their fans want. For example, they are probably going to have to find a different story for Damon Salvatore that does not involve him falling in love with anyone else.

While we know that Nina Dobrev is gone from the show and will most likely not return until an eventual series finale airs, we also know at the same time that they do have to create some other new adventures for the character that are interesting, and the show doesn’t want to turn into watching Damon sit around and feel sad, hoping for her to come back at some point. They’re also not going to kill off Bonnie just for the sake of bringing her back, so you can go ahead and write that off as a possibility.

As executive producer Caroline Dries tells The Hollywood Reporter, there are some plans that are going to be put into place here:

“She told him, ‘Go live your life. I’m going to be here when I wake up, and we can be together.’ She doesn’t want him sitting around like a monk, being chaste in the meantime. But Damon’s still in love with her. It’s not like he’s going to start sleeping around or having girlfriends. He needs to grieve, and see who he is. Any girl we set him up with, or we tried to force him into a new relationship with, the fans would just hate it — hate her, for sure — so it would just never click. We’re very much aware of that, and we don’t want to see that either.”

It’s true that we don’t really want to see Damon with almost anyone else, and we would feel really sad for whoever was cast to be a new love interest, anyway, given how fans would react to it.
