Ratings: Did ‘Finding Carter’ season 2 hold onto summer audience?

Finding Carter -There is such a thing known as a sophomore slump in television, and often this is blown up to new levels when you try to move your show to a different time of year. With all of this, it was easy to go into the second-season premiere of “Finding Carter” being a little bit concerned as to what the numbers were going to be. This is a heavily-serialized show, and one with subject matter that is not always the easiest to digest.

Luckily, MTV and the series have a reason to smile this week. The numbers for the crazy premiere (read the review here) are in, and for the most part they are impressive. The show tied its season 1 finale rating in the 18-49 demo (0.5), and improved in total viewers up to almost 1.1 million. Maybe not waiting a full year for the second season actually helped the show? It’s possible, as a lack of competition may have also. There is not much else on Tuesday night that appeals to a similar demographic.

We’re not going to sugarcoat anything here: The network really needed this. The ratings for the first part of the year for MTV have not been great, with “Eye Candy” turning out to be a big disappointment commercially, and with “Teen Wolf” not coming back until the summer. “Awkward” is entering its final season, and we are still waiting for a return date here. This show should keep the scripted slate for the network solid for now, and we hope that it convinces the network to take some more bold programming chances. “Finding Carter” is proving that there is an appetite out there for more than just what you would expect from traditional teenage programming.

We will have some more “Finding Carter” scoop soon, but for now head over here to read our preview for next week’s episode.
