‘Finding Carter’ season 2 premiere review: Lori, David, Elizabeth in secrets

Finding Carter -Season 1 of MTV’s “Finding Carter” ended with multiple cliffhangers in different forms. There was the literal action of Lori snatching Carter away for the second time, but in addition to that, there was the emotional cliffhanger. Lori claimed that there was some dirt still out there on David and Elizabeth, and was she ever right!

In between some screaming matches and one of the most brutal parent fight-scenes we’ve ever seen on TV (we want to know what the filming process for that was like!), we eventually figured out that Lori was actually a donor, and her ties to Taylor and Carter were so much more than what they knew. Because of Lori’s biological connection to the girls, Elizabeth’s fears are ultimately simple: She worries that they will never see her as a true mother again. We’d tell her that so long as she is actually telling the truth about everything now, she probably has nothing to worry about. Lori is a kidnapper, and no biological connection to the girls is going to change her history.

The question that you have to wonder now is this: What is David hiding? We know Elizabeth’s secret, but before being locked away, Lori hinted that he “did a number” on the both of them. Clearly, not every secret here has been revealed, and we’re not surprised. The whole point of this show so far seems to be telling an emotional story and devastating as many people as possible along the way. This is not going to be an easy journey for Carter to discover herself, and establish what her true ties to Lori will be.

As a form of entertainment, it is hard to dispute that “Finding Carter” is compelling. There are countless issues with believability and it does descend into melodrama, but with the five characters we’ve mentioned plus Max, the series has layered characters who breathe life in this world. They’ve also mastered the art of giving fans some answers, while raising new questions at the same time.

This is why we’re leaving the premiere feeling satisfied. We are going to want to know more in the end about David, but for an hour of TV, MTV and the producers gave us quite a bit to throw us back into Carter’s complicated world. Grade: B-.
