‘The Flash’ episode 17 preview: The Trickster’s latest trick

Hamill -How do you out-trick someone whose greatest trick is copying another Trickster? This is the question at the center of Tuesday night’s new episode of “The Flash,” which appropriately is carrying with it the title of “Tricksters.” We will be going back in time in a sense, but not Flash-style, to the 1990s in the sneak peek below. This is the best evidence beyond Mark Hamill’s appearance that Andrew Kreisberg and the writers are desperate to capture the feel of the original CBS show with this particular episode.

Joe West and Barry Allen find the warehouse of the original Trickster, which from all standpoints is pretty darn cool. However, in the process they also figure out that someone has been there in the past twenty years, and that it is not nearly as abandoned as they once thought. The new, copycat Trickster has taken some of his greatest tricks to use for his own and he also almost kills Joe in the process. (Barry, meanwhile, probably would have been okay. The guy heals quickly.)

While we are largely convinced that the majority of this story is going to be a throwaway when it comes to long lasting story-lines, save for maybe a few scenes regarding Barry’s Harrison Wells dilemma, it should be fairly fun. Most villains within this universe have operated with a specific endgame. The Weather Wizard was out for revenge, while Captain Cold started out on a quest for cash. Dr. Wells a.k.a. Eobard Thawne just wants to make his way back to his own time. The Trickster, meanwhile, seems to thrive on chaos. There’s a reason that the original man in Hamill’s James Jesse is parked behind bars and has spent the past twenty years there.

What is also interesting is that this could be more of a cognitive foe for Barry than anything he’s come across lately. We don’t get the sense that there are metahuman abilities involved here, but that doesn’t mean that the Trickster can’t out smart The Flash.
