‘Glee’ season 5: Bosses considering full-time shift to New York; good for Lea Michele fans, but…

In today’s edition of “Glee Stories You Assumed Was Going to Happen Eventually,” we pose to you the following question: Are we finally going to see a full-time shift away from McKinley High and Lima, just so that the focus can be instead on those in New York City?

Given the way in which the show has been set up, with many McKinley seniors currently considering a move to the Big Apple, you likely thought that this was going to happen anyway, but a new report from TVLine confirms this, and even goes so far as to say that a full move to New York could happen as soon as this season. Presumably, we’re guessing that it would be near the end of the year in spring given that Nationals has not happened yet, but the writers could suddenly feel a need to rush it.

The truth of the matter here is that McKinley has more or less run its course. Characters that were once robust (Sue Sylvester, Coach Beiste) now have very little to do; even Matthew Morrison probably had the best moment that he’ll ever have on the show in the closing minutes of the Cory Monteith tribute “The Quarterback.” While some of the newbies have their advantages (we do actually like what has been done with Kitty and Ryder), it’s hard to justify spending time on two separate worlds when it marginalizes both of them. A move to New York should happen after the graduation of Artie, Tina, Blaine, and Sam, and it will.

As for who to bring over to New York from this group, we imagine that both Artie and Blaine are givens thanks to the story that has been presented. We’d like to see Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., and Mark Salling also come back given that some of the other cast members would be gone. Maybe even get Dianna Agron back for a few episodes, or Heather Morris down the line once she is ready to come back to work.

But after Monteith’s death, it almost feels strange to keep going back to a place that has so many memories attached to it; it’s now time to move on, and for “Glee” to get the sort of happy conclusion it hopes to, some major moves need to be made.
