Legacies season 2: Would Ian Somerhalder ever appear as Damon?

Legacies season 2 is currently doing a great job of keeping, frankly, the legacy of The Vampire Diaries alive at The CW. This is a show that features fun, action, mystery, and all sorts of supernatural spookiness. That’s without even mentioning the romance, which was of course one of the calling cards for the original Vampire Diaries when it was on the air.

While we haven’t seen too many original cast members on the new show, there is certainly still a lot of DNA. Matthew Davis is still a huge part of the story as Alaric, and we’ve also had references to Elena and plenty of discussion around Caroline. She’s been out there as a part of the story, even though Candice King has yet to appear herself.

So what about Ian Somerhalder? Is there a chance that Damon could ever turn up here? Speaking in a new interview with TV Guide promoting his new series V Wars, Ian has an interpretation of the story that makes his future (or lack thereof) very clear:

“He’s not alive … Damon is dead. That’s how he finds Stefan. He became human, and then he knocks on the door and he goes home. Now he’s with his brother.”

Technically, Ian is right — Damon did die at the end of The Vampire Diaries. The question that we always wondered is when, given that he could’ve technically been out there for many years before finding Peace and eventually meeting back up with Stefan. We always thought he could still be out there within the world of Legacies.

In the end, everything is up for interpretation and for Ian, he may feel like the character is “dead” in the sense that he’s had his closure with him. We get it, given how many years that he played him. At this point, he may feel like this is ample time in order to say goodbye.

For Legacies, we do think that there’s enough exciting story coming up that there’s no real pressing need to feature more characters from either The Vampire Diaries or The Originals. Nonetheless, we absolutely have a good time whenever there is a chance to see anyone show up.
