Supergirl season 5 premiere sneak peek: Andrea Rojas’ CatCo plan

Supergirl

Who is Andrea Rojas? She is someone who you are going to have a chance to meet on Sunday night’s Supergirl season 5 premiere episode, and she’s going to come to CatCo with some big ideas as to how to run things.

There’s a terrifying amount of topical storytelling within this first episode, especially when it comes to one thing more so than everything else — content strategies with big media companies. We’re seeing more and more major publications choose to move away from top-tier journalism into things that are easy to convert into revenue — think in terms of quick, buzzworthy pieces that generate a lot of shares across all platforms. You can see Rojas introduce this strategy in the video below courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, and you can also get a sense of one other thing — how unhappy some other characters are with her ideas. James Olsen contends that a big part of CatCo’s success is their hard-hitting journalism … but then he also admits that their total number of subscribers is down. Rojas’ belief is that we’re seeing CatCo become a little bit too elitist, where their brand of news is causing mainstream supporters to scatter and look elsewhere.

It’s smart for Supergirl to dive into this brand of storytelling moving into season 5, largely because the issues being explored here are ones that are true to the journalism world in 2019 … and there is no clear answer to it. We do think reporters want to deliver the best possible content, but corporations are worried that doing this means fewer articles and also less opportunities to make immediate money. Keeping a business profitable is important to long-term viability, and that’s why in the end, the best thing that you can hope for is compromise. Either you need to continue to do great journalism and find a new way to market to all audiences, or you need to shift your strategy so that you can immediately appeal to said audience. You can’t continue to do the same thing that you have for a long period of time and expect some sort of immediate result on the other side.

In the end, we’ll get a better sense of what Rojas’ total media empire looks like in just over 24 hours!
