NCIS season 17 premiere: Why a Ziva, McGee reunion needs to happen

We know that the NCIS season 17 premiere is going to have a lot of ground to cover. After all, Ziva is around for the first time in years! This is an opportunity to explore where the character has been, and also some of what she is up to now. A lot of ground was covered already in the extended trailer for the new season, which features a specific threat that is bringing Ziva and Gibbs together.

Yet, what about some other characters? Because time is of the essence in the premiere, we realize that there may not be too many other opportunities to spotlight some other characters. Nonetheless, we do think that it’s necessary as we get further into the season … and one between McGee and Ziva needs to happen sooner rather than later.

So why spotlight these two together? We like to think that there are three simple reasons for it.

1. Nostalgia – That is a big part of it given that these characters spent many years together, worked together, and had a great relationship through everything that they went through. It’s impossible to ignore the impact that they had on one another’s lives! Nostalgia is a driving force behind Ziva’s return — she is a character who has been missed by many people for many years — and it remains a driving force now.

2. Helping McGee forgive Bishop – This is a big one. Judging from what we’ve seen in some of the promotional material for the season already, McGee is struggling with the fact that Ellie kept an enormous secret from him following the events of “She.” He and Ziva were like family! Through a scene between the two, though, Ziva could ease the burden on Bishop and remind McGee personally that she asked Bishop to keep things a secret.

3. An update on Tony – Because Gibbs isn’t the most social guy out there, McGee’s a better source of information on DiNozzo if Ziva hasn’t been able to communicate with him. We would assume that Tony and Tim do still talk on some level and she can learn more about what’s going on with him and Tali.

Remember, the NCIS season 17 premiere arrives on CBS on September 24.
