Why did Lela Loren leave Power in season 6 premiere?

Why did Lela Loren leave Power after six seasons on the job? Following Sunday night’s season premiere episode, it makes sense to wonder. The death of Angela was hardly a surprise — she was shot in the closing seconds of season 5 — but we do think that the other side of the cliffhanger does still come as somewhat of a shock.

Let’s just put things this way — so many shows fake us out when it comes to cliffhangers that it was easy to assume that Angela would somehow survive.

Whenever a performer does leave a show, it is easy to think that there is going to be some sort of big controversy on the other side. We live within a world where there’s an obsession around this very thing! Yet, in this case, it doesn’t feel as though there’s that much to discuss here. Loren’s exit from the show doesn’t have anything to do with issues behind the scenes or the like. Instead, it has more to do with the show’s complicated creative — people die in this world. That’s just what happens when you are constantly steeped in violence.

Speaking via Decider, Loren had the following message to pass along about the character’s needs to die — and also how long she’s been aware that this twist is coming:

“I’ve known since January of filming Season 5 [in 2018], so it’s been a long time … I started thinking about the consequences of killing the four [main characters on the show]. If they killed Tasha (Naturi Naughton) that doesn’t set anything up. If they killed Ghost, that’s problematic for various reasons. If they killed Tommy then everybody goes home holding hands. But if Angela gets killed then it creates a whole other world of conflict. So I was like, I don’t know, but 70/30 I think this is what’s gonna happen.”

Angela’s death does suit the story, as it does create all sorts of questions regarding if Ghost will go down for what happened to her. Tommy is the responsible party, but we know that Ghost is not altogether keen on turning him over to the authorities. Instead, he wants to get vengeance for himself in whatever way that he possibly can.
