Love Island USA: Why CBS is sticking with it — at least for now

Love Island

When the first numbers came out for Love Island USA earlier this year, there were understandably some questions out there about whether or not CBS would want to stick with a show that, to be frank, wasn’t killing it in the numbers. Yet, the network has to their credit stuck with the format, airing it still every single night during the week and will continue to do so, pending some last-minute news, until the end of its predetermined summer run.

So why do this, even with the news that Love Island USA is drawing some of the lowest live numbers out of all unscripted network shows this summer? As it turns out, some of it is about specific demos. Another part of it is about streaming data and interactivity. Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, CBS’ entertainment head Kelly Kahl had the following to say on the subject:

“This is an audience we’re chasing, primarily younger women, that CBS doesn’t necessarily speak to on a regular basis, and an audience that doesn’t watch linear TV a whole lot … I think that’s borne out in our streaming numbers. This is one of the strongest streaming shows we have already. It’s become a huge performer on social, where a lot of nights it’s trending. All the signs around the linear number are very, very good. The question for us is can we get the word out and eventually kick it up to the next level.”

This is a pretty frank comment from Kahl, and one that speaks to his awareness that CBS is hardly a bastion for young viewers. This show is a chance to slowly change that and this is what he is looking for out of it. He noted that the show recently drew some of its highest vote totals that it has to date, showing that people are getting more on board the community aspect of the series.

So while Love Island is not a home run or even a double (to continue to use a baseball analogy), it does feel like CBS is going to see things through — and there’s still a small chance for a season 2. If the show keeps its audience and they think they can get more people on board next year, that’s something to think about.

Do you think Love Island USA will be a one-and-done experiment?
