The Bachelorette ratings with Hannah Brown down vs. Becca Kufrin

Hannah

Is The Bachelorette actually starting to slow down, at least when it comes to the show’s live+same-day ratings momentum? Three episodes in, it’s starting to be a worthy conversation. Despite all of the hype going in about Hannah Brown being a big possibility, the numbers just aren’t panning out right now.

For example, last night’s new episode end up generating a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and also just under 4.7 million viewers. These are some of the lowest ratings that we’ve seen for the show in a while, and while it was Memorial Day and people may have been doing some other things, The Bachelorette actually performed better on Memorial Day last year. In general, Hannah’s season is down more than 20% from Becca Kufrin’s season last year.

So what’s the big difference here? Some of it may come down to casting and the personal investment in a given lead’s journey. It’s a big time commitment to get invested in The Bachelor or The Bachelorette — think in terms of two hours a night for weeks on end. That’s why the story of the lead is so important. We certainly think that Hannah is a captivating lead; yet, at the same exact time, Becca last year had so much more built-in story because of everything that happened to her. She was instantly compelling and had people who really knew her.

Meanwhile, Hannah’s biggest obstacle is that really, she was gone from Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor before hometown dates, so we don’t really know as much about her or her family. That can be troublesome for someone who becomes the lead. We do also think that the earlier start to this season hurt it, mostly because there were other shows like The Voice on the air at the same time that viewers were actually trying to dive in and enjoy this show. We’ll see where the ratings go for the rest of the season — this may actually have the potential to be the best season of The Bachelorette in years when you think about Hannah’s personality and also some of the people who are a part of her cast.

As for whether or not the show can get some viewers who aren’t currently watching live … that’s going to probably be up to word of mouth, and people who decide to give the series a little bit more of a chance. We certainly think that it’s worth it almost as a psychological study of weird human behavior.
