Blindspot season 4 ratings rise; the extent of the good news
Last night’s new episode of the NBC show ended up generating in total a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also 3.170 million viewers. This marks the show’s best performance in over two months, and that’s certainly something to be excited about as we get a little bit closer to the key May sweeps period. It’s also harder to get ratings increases at all in the spring, especially when temperatures are rising and there is a whole lot more going on in terms of competition out there.
So does an improved performance for one week really do a lot in order to move the needle for a renewal? The short answer is that it probably doesn’t have a huge impact, given that there are 22 episodes in a season and NBC is likely looking at a performance all across the board rather than just on one given week. Yet, we certainly think that it doesn’t hurt anything to show a little bit of positive momentum this time of year. Blindspot has had to overcome a lot the past few months, whether it be strong competition opposite MacGyver or Last Man Standing and then also a number of hiatuses throughout the year that makes it a little bit tricky to know when the show is coming back.
If there’s a reason to feel hopeful at the moment for more Blindspot on the air, it’s that NBC just gave a green light to more of another show in Good Girls that isn’t drawing significantly better ratings. Sure, the network may own a greater stake in that show, but we’re getting a good sense that they are looking at more than just live ratings — just think in terms of DVR performance and a wide array of other factors like streaming. Even if Blindspot gets a shortened season, that’s better than no season 5 at all!
There’s also one other important thing to think about in regards to Blindspot and the performance of NBC on Friday nights — do they really think that they’re going to find a show that is delivering better numbers? That could be one of the bigger litmus tests that they have as they try to figure out whether or not they want to bring this show back for another season. We’re not sure that there are a lot of other hits that they’d want to move to this timeslot, and having a little bit of stability in between this show and The Blacklist could actually do them a little bit of good. We’ll see, as NBC has a few weeks to render a verdict.
