Shadowhunters season 3 episode 15 preview: ‘To the Night Children’

Shadowhunters season 3 spoilers

Next week, Shadowhunters season 3 episode 15 is bringing you a tale of risks and rewards. In “To the Night Children,” you’ll see some familiar faces from the Institute and beyond tackle morality — or rather, their own precise version of it. You obviously want to do the right thing … but what is the right thing? Imagine yourself captured by an evil supervillain who is threatening to kill fifteen people, or just one person who is a prominent world leader. Do you kill the one to save the many, even though the one is important. What is the right thing? How do you shape the rules?

Throughout this upcoming episode, moral dilemmas are center stage — as indicated further by the attached synopsis:

As the saying goes, “rules are made to be broken.” But what if the rules are there for a reason? Several members of the team must examine the reasoning behind certain rules after consequences to questionable actions come to light. Whether the rules were broken because of love, loyalty or revenge, does the end justify the means?

So as we think about rules and consequences entering this upcoming episode, we also must think about to whom they apply.

Alec – How desperate is he to get revenge on Lorenzo Rey? We know many things about Alec, with one of the biggest ones being that he is fiercely protective of those he loves and will protect them to his grave. He’s not going to be afraid of Lorenzo because of his powers or his insight into the supernatural world. The dude stole Magnus’ apartment for no real reason other than sheer pettiness. For that and that alone, there should be consequences — it just comes down to how far he wants to go to make that happen, and whether or not he even clues Magnus in on it in advance. (Obviously, we’re just speculating, but does any of this feel altogether out-of-character for him?)

Jace – How badly does he want to see Jonathan rotting, once and for all? Pretty badly. We imagine that if you’re Dominic Sherwood’s character, your blood is probably one degree away from its boiling point. Jonathan just did his real-life version of a Twitter impersonator and got super-close to the woman that you love. His body and soul was stolen from him, and he knows that there’s a link forming between him and Clary. How do you cut off the head of the snake, and does doing so violently make you a terrible person? Do the ends justify the means?

Simon – Where does he go from here? How far will he be willing to go in order to help Luke, and is it better that he takes a breather in general after all he’s been through as of late? Simon’s stress level has gotta be somewhere around a 13 out of 10.

If someone does something amoral, does it change our opinion of them?

No, but they must remember this: There’s a clear difference between doing a bad thing once for the sake of the perceived greater good, and then also doing a bad thing several times over with the same justification. You can get addiction to the rage and the hate, and you need to be able to either pull yourself out of the muck and onto dry land … or hope that someone is standing by to grab your hand and yank you out.

It’s okay to take risks and do wrongs for the sake of those you love, but every actions have consequences … and some can be severe.
