Chicago PD season 6 episode 12 review: Was Halstead arrested for murder?

Tonight, Jesse Lee Soffer’s character was doing what he could in order to take down a dealer named Garrett — his story was that he was doing what he could in order to apprehend him. Yet, Kelton and others were pushing an angle where Halstead actually murdered him.
Was there a motive for it? It certainly seemed so when you think about a couple of different variables. For starters, Halstead went rogue right before finding his body. Also, it turned out that he had a motive for what went down. As it seemed as though the walls were starting to close in around Jay, in turn we saw Voight and Intelligence do what they could in order to protect him. He made it clear that he couldn’t be around the case anymore, and in the process of doing all of this, Voight encouraged Jay to not get a lawyer. At this particular point, this would only make him a little more suspicious.
So while Jay hung back, we saw Voight and the rest of Intelligence go to work and do whatever they could to get real answers. What we saw by the end of the episode was a chilling reminder that for some former law enforcement officers, the current state of the system just wasn’t good enough. With that in mind, the real responsible party for the death wanted to take matters within his own hands to a certain degree.
This was a case, in the end, of a guy in Gus taking out someone who he certainly considered bad. Voight had no choice but to arrest him, mostly because of the fact that if he didn’t, he could potentially end up losing Jay from the force. Even if Hank sympathized with Gus’ situation, it didn’t quite matter. He was faced with a choice to protect one of his own and he didn’t do that.
Here’s where things got interesting: Gus requested for a little time alone to get things in order, and Voight allowed that … likely knowing what the guy was going to do in take his own life. Mere minutes after he stepped out, Gus pulled the trigger and that was that. Voight walked away from the house even as it happened, realizing that he wasn’t going to be walking back in to arrest him.
CarterMatt Verdict
Tonight’s Chicago PD did feature a notable Jesse Lee Soffer performance, and in the process of that showed how far Hank will go to protect him — and also the bond that Jay and Hailey have. She was there for him at the end, as he tried to handle his relief over not being arrested with still the tragedy of the case itself.
