Is America’s Got Talent season 14 really replacing judging panel?

According to a report from Page Six, the NBC series executive-produced by Simon Cowell is considering bringing out a totally new panel of judges for the upcoming batch of episodes this summer. Howie Mandel is the longest-tenured judge on the panel, while Heidi Klum and Mel B have each also been there for a rather lengthy period of time as well. Simon is actually the newest judge on the panel, though he has been on Britain’s Got Talent for much of its run.
Here’s what is a little bit bizarre about this report — for starters, there’s no real reason given for the alleged shake-up behind the scenes, other than that Cowell supposedly feels like it’s time to mix things up. Also, the publication was told by another source that it’s not true — the AGT brand right now is extremely strong, and with that, it’s hard to imagine them wanting to do all that much in order to change it. While we don’t think that Mel, Heidi, or Howie have been met with rave reviews the past couple of seasons, we do also think that they are all solid in their roles — even when we disagree with some of them (like Heidi rarely ever praising comedians), it’s all for the sake of a good time.
The final thing to say about all of these rumors is simply this: It’s really far too early to know anything for sure. Maybe it’s something folks behind the scenes have considered, but it’s hard to believe anyone has their mind made up yet. The auditions in front of the judges will not film for several more weeks, and that leaves open a good stretch of time for things to change. Judge hires are not often figured out until the very last minute.
What AGT would likely do with new judges
Our feeling is that the show would try to go a little bit younger in order to attract more viewers within the 18-49 demographic. Yet, sometimes that move backfires when you either have people who don’t take the job seriously or just don’t mesh. We don’t exactly think that all of the judge hires under Cowell have been strong — take a look at some of the misfires on the USA X Factor (other than Demi Lovato).
