For the time being, it’s not altogether clear if Adam is going to be able to move forward with his career; yet, he does at least have an opportunity to keep doing his job. He proved valuable in tonight’s case, which was tied to what’s going on with the higher-ups at the Chicago police department, including one of the big bosses in Mayoral candidate Kelton (played by Scrubs alum John C. McGinley). This case navigated the tough world of campaign finance, and it also did put Hank Voight in a difficult position by the end of the episode.
This is the episode that really brought Anne Heche back into the fold as Brennan and it’s fair to say that she was fantastic at the very end of the hour. Her scenes were Jason Beghe were dark and intense, as she pushed him to release Andre Griffin, a suspect Hank had a ton of evidence on. Voight was out for blood and there was a pretty good reason for it, especially after Atwater found himself shot in the middle of the investigation. He turned out to be okay, but that doesn’t change the fact that Voight wants revenge wherever he can get it.
The problem is that Brennan didn’t want Griffin released, and she’s had Hank under her control ever since she helped to bail him out of the Olinsky fiasco. Voight wanted nothing more than to be able to go up to Kelton at the end of the episode and blow up some of his dirty politics, including how he and Brennan wanted him to look the other way on an extremely violent crime. It was Halstead who stopped him, telling him that people like Kelton were far more dangerous than someone like Griffin. They had to find a way to build up an arsenal before going after them … which we assume is going to happen down the road.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, this episode was excellent in establishing a lot of great drama, and also giving more of a real presence to Kelton, someone who will likely factor in down the road. We do think that Chicago PD is more effective when we have notable adversaries, and we’ve found some now that are certainly dirty in a way in which Voight isn’t even at this point. This is all setting the stage for some really meaty, dramatic storytelling a little bit later this season.
