Outlander season 4 episode 11 video: Jocasta pushes Bree to marry

Here, you get a conversation between Brianna and Jocasta that could have large implications on the upcoming story as a whole. Brianna is now many months pregnant, and while staying at River Run, Jocasta develops the idea that she should get married. We know that there’s at least one suitor vying for her affection in Mr. Forbes, and it certainly seems feasible that more could follow.
So why should Brianna marry? There is obviously a financial advantage to it for Jocasta, which Bree fittingly does challenge her on. If Bree marries someone of status, it certainly helps Jocasta’s own business and River Run as a whole. Yet, Jocasta does make another argument to her, one that she does while also discussing her own family’s history at the same time. In the case of Ellen MacKenzie, she had her first child with Brian after the two were married — even if she was pregnant before the union. Jocasta’s argument is that if she has her baby unmarried, she will be looked at by society with scorn and that is something she doesn’t want for her.
Is Jocasta saying something here that is true to the time? Unfortunately, history seems to suggest so — but we also do think that every single practice River Run should be shrugged off because of historical implication. This is also her justification for slavery — everyone else in the community does it, so why should she deviate from it? Regardless of what society may think, Bree does have the right to do what she wishes — but without a doubt, she is going to be put into a tight spot within this episode. She’s in a society that is full of judgment, she has eager and potentially-pushy suitors, and beyond all of that she doesn’t know 1) when Jamie and Claire are coming back or 2) whether or not Roger will be joining them. She has some important decisions to make within this episode, and we only hope that there are some allies nearby to help her make them.
