George R.R. Martin teases more potential Game of Thrones spin-offs
While nothing is 100% confirmed as of yet, Martin wrote in his latest blog that there are some other shows still in development by HBO within this particular universe. To go along with that, he also promised that he is going to finish the final books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series that really started it all:
I am back in my fortress of solitude, and back in Westeros. It won’t be tomorrow, and it won’t be next week, but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. Meanwhile, you have the final season of GAME OF THRONES coming, and the new show that is not yet officially called THE LONG NIGHT being cast, and a couple more shows still being scripted… and a few other cool things in the works as well.
We do think that HBO is right to keep some of their options open when it comes to the future of Game of Thrones, mostly due to the fact that there are opportunities here to really dive in and explore some other eras and do some other fun things. Also, we think it’s a move that gives them flexibility. Say, for example, they wanted to greenlight two different shows and air them in alternating years — this would give both shows a chance to really develop their material without making it critical that the network have new seasons for them every single year.
For now, though, we’re only expecting one spin-off just because doing anything else may be confusing. A viable option for them could seemingly be figuring out a proper way in which to do short series runs for a number of different spin-offs — that way, there are multiple different stories that can be told over a period of five or so years.
The big thing to stress here is that regardless of whatever HBO ends up deciding for these series, there is clearly no reason to hurry anything along. After all, Game of Thrones is not even airing its final season until we get around to April and the earliest we foresee the first prequel airing is 2020, unless something just so happens to be magically rushed along.
