Family Guy honors Carrie Fisher, brings in Bryan Cranston, Niecy Nash
On Sunday night, the series officially put the character of Angela to rest with a funeral scene, one that featured Peter quoting all sorts of television (see below). There was a sense of sadness to the scene, but also something that still had humor and felt very much in the vein of something that Fisher herself would appreciate. She was a huge part of the show family, and with that, we’re not surprised that the writers found a unique way to honor her. They didn’t want to just recast this character as we see sometimes when actors merely decide to leave a show.
Of course, the story of Family Guy does need to move forward and with that, the series has officially cast some new bosses, played by Claws star Niecy Nash and Breaking Bad alum Bryan Cranston. There is something really fun about the idea that it could take two different actors to effectively replace Fisher, which we do think of as another tribute to Carrie in its own right.
While we’re not so sure that Angela will be mentioned before tonight’s episode, she’s always going to be remembered as a part of the series for longtime devoted viewers. She first recorded a voice for the show all the way back in 2005, so she had a history with this series that dated back for more than ten years. Even if she wasn’t in every episode, she still had quite the impact. (It’s a bit of a Seth MacFarlane tradition at this point to cast legendary actors in some notable roles — the series also lost another legend recently in Adam west, who voiced the Mayor on the series for many years.)
Ultimately, what makes tributes to actors on a show like Family Guy are the more spectacular is that they are so few and far between. It’s because of this that when you see them, they actually matter a little bit more than they do otherwise. They stick with you.
