So who is this guy? On the surface, nothing other than a philanderer who is being blackmailed by someone who wants ransom for some rather damaging photos of him via a hard drive. Yet, he also used to preside over a committee about covert ops, and he realized that there was one file on that hard drive that could be damaging: Dragonfly. This just so turns out to be something extremely personal to Matty, and something that she wants back at all costs. That’s why she sent the team — by commercial flight, no less — to Ghana in order to retrieve it.
When they got to Ghana, the Phoenix team realized something else surprising: The person taking the $10,000 ransom was actually just a kid. She was smart and possessed the ability to rebuild computers — despite her situation, Riley found a kinship with her. She didn’t seem to be malicious in her pursuit of the Dragonfly file (she didn’t even know it existed), so Mac and the team tried friendliness as a strategy. This was the best way to potentially find a hard drive amidst the tech-rubble present in the area.
Most of these kids are a part of their own community around the tech dump, one that has its own leaders who apparently show up, connect some goods, and scare the heck out of all the kids. The moment these guys showed up to collect some of the materials, Mac and the team found the real bad guys. They just had to track them and keep most of the kids safe.
The more that this episode went along, the harder it was for the team to secure the file and then, also keep themselves safe in the process. The girl who was responsible for helping Mac and the team eventually won herself passage to Los Angeles, but right when it looked as though Dragonfly was obtained and all was good for the group, some of the other kids were in danger. The Phoenix Foundation was therefore left with a choice: Either take the file and run or try to protect the young people at the tech-scrapyard. Which choice did you think they were going to make?
The Final Showdown
Of course, Jack, Mac, Bozer, and Riley ended up going back to rescue everyone, using another signature Mac plan (this time using some battery bombs) to save most of the kids and also trip up the bad guys. There were probably more people hit upside the head with computer equipment in this scene than almost the rest of the entire series. It was funny in a sadistic way, but also heart-pounding.
In the aftermath of this, Matty confirmed that many of the bad guys in Ghana were going away, and beyond that, the team high-tailed it back to the Phoenix in order to bring her the file. They decided not to open it, and to allow her to have her secret once and for all. The girl who helped the team also decided to stay back in Ghana in order to help her people, rather than taking the offer to go back to LA.
What was Dragonfly?
While the team wasn’t let in on the secret, we hoped that we the viewers at least would be. In this video, we met a man named Ethan Raines who was about to embark on an assignment named Dragonfly. It was a deep-cover operation, and as it turns out, Ethan was her husband.
What happened to him? That’s still a mystery, but a very good one for the show to address down the line.
CarterMatt Verdict
This episode was a strong one from start to finish, mostly because there was that perfect combination of a little bit of humor and heart. We saw the Phoenix Foundation do some good for others, while at the same time working to help Matty … even if they didn’t know why for the bulk of the story. Now that we do, there is a fantastic story for the writers to pick up down the line!
