Today, ABC confirmed that they are giving a full season to the cop series. What that means is that this new season will have 20 episodes in total. For some shows, a full season is 22 episodes, but in this case, The Rookie premiered a little bit late so 20 makes sense.

ABC clearly has a lot of faith in this series, which has a rather-strong cast as a whole and creatively still stands to go in some pretty interesting story directions. While the ratings for the series to date have not been necessarily fantastic, they have at least been fairly steady in the key 18-49 demo and total viewers. This is also a notoriously-weak timeslot for ABC so the hope here may be that this is a show that can build a little bit more of an audience over time as people start to discover it.

The real test of The Rookie, at least for us, will be seeing how it fares in the spring once The Conners wraps up its run for the season. While that lead-in may not be hugely impactful to The Rookie in that it airs an hour and a half later, there is somewhat of a ratings trickle-down effect that happens. This show also has some tough competition, airing opposite New Amsterdam (one of the season’s biggest hits to date) alongside NCIS: New Orleans over at CBS which already has a dedicated audience.

As for whether or not The Rookie gets another season, that’s something that the next few months will make a little bit clearer. If the ratings stay solid the rest of the way, we’d argue that it has a really good chance.
