Saturday Night Live promo: Awkwafina parties with Beck Bennett
As a viewer, it’s also a thrill to see her on the Studio 8H stage. One of the things that we do love about this show as a longtime viewer is when it takes some chances. Returning hosts can be fun, but we’re all for newcomers who have a unique personality and a perspective that’s different from the standard SNL host over the years. Some new hosts (especially the super-serious actors who come on around Oscar season) just feel like they are going to disappoint from the jump. With Awkwafina, it does feel like there’s an element of the unknown, where you don’t quite know what she is going to do.

We do think that the first promo, a funny party montage with Beck Bennett, does expose some of the series’ larger problems: It’s going to be hard to do a Crazy Rich Asians spoof when there aren’t many Asian cast members on the show. (There also haven’t been anywhere near enough hosts of Asian heritage on SNL over the years, either.)
The musical guest for this weekend’s episode is Travis Scott, and it definitely feels like he is coming on board at the right time. After all, he’s following Kanye West. It’s fair to say that his appearance this time around was not exactly well-received. (Kenan Thompson recently commented on it on Late Night with Seth Meyers — watch that appearance now over here.)
