Saturday Night Live: Kenan Thompson talks Kanye West on-stage rant

SNL

It didn’t take too long for us to get the first Saturday Night Live cast member reaction to Kanye West’s on-stage rant.

For those who missed it, at the end of this past episode we ended up seeing Kanye (who was the musical guest for the premiere) bring everyone out on stage so that he could rant about his political leanings while wearing his Make America Great Again hat. At one point, he got booed by members of the audience, but he continued to rant on regardless.

Speaking about the matter on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week, Kenan Thompson (who may leave the show at the end of the year if his new comedy lands a series order) made it clear that this was not exactly the right time or place to issue such a lengthy statement.

“I did my part in the monologue, and I got to watch the circus unfold … He voiced his opinion, very loudly, for a long time … We’re all entitled to our opinion, [but] I don’t know if that’s the moment, necessarily, to hold people hostage like that.”

It feels about right that it is Kenan who is one of the first people to chime in on all of this, mostly because he is one of the fairest, most-levelheaded people out there. He’s typically pretty quiet away from the show and outspoken politically, so it was interesting to get to hear his take on all of this alongside listening to him explain why this was such a questionable decision on Kanye’s part. (Kenan makes it clear that he left before this entire ordeal took place, but he certainly heard plenty about it.)
